College Interest Section Event

On May 16, 2009, the College Interest Section held a spring workshop at the Minnesota Literacy Council entitled "Innovations in Technology for Nontraditional Adult College ESL Learners." Susan Wetenkamp-Brandt started out the workshop with a presentation on free resources from the Center for Language Education and Research (CLEAR) at Michigan State University. She highlighted the Revisions tool for writing classes, audio drop boxes, and conversations. She demonstrated ways of using these resources by showing us her Wiki's capability.

Alicia Andre from MCTC presented her ongoing development of a hybrid course. She showed us her challenges, and how she has overcome technical difficulties by modifying course content. Her use of the Flip video Web cam showed the ease to which we can use a laptop to video shoot and edit. She showed us ways to use the tools for classroom management as well.

Linnea Barton of U of MN Crookston showed us the evaluation of simplicity of use vs. time investment-one of the frequent challenges of using online resources in analyzing the payoff to the developmental aids. She created guidelines for analyzing the best use of online technology: consider goals first, think of integration, don't underestimate complexity, provide necessary support, and involve students in decisions. Web sites were given out by all instructors.

As we move more and more toward integration of technology, these workshops will be increasingly necessary to have. Thanks to the presenters and the attendees who gave up a spring Saturday morning to learn more about technology.

Advocacy Volunteers needed!

MinneTESOL is working to do more in the area of advocacy for ESL teachers and learners, as well as issues related to our profession such as immigration, language, and education policy. Are you interested in getting involved? We are forming an Advocacy Committee, and we need your help! Please contact Patsy Vinogradov at patsy@minnetesol.org.

Watch this page for more links and information related to advocacy issues. And if you have a link or resource we should share with our membership, please let us know!

Volunteer Scanning Needed!

As you know, the Minne WI TESOL Journal is now an online publication. This medium allows our journal to be available and accessible to anyone with an internet connection.

However, many years of past journals are only available on paper. We'd like to scan these journals in and post them online, so that these excellent articles could also be easily accessed. We need a volunteer to take the time to scan and save these articles for posting. Could you help us? Instructions and guidance will be offered, if you can provide the time and dedication! Contact Patsy at patsy@minnetesol.org if this is the job for you!
